On the Tele

We all love Offspring. All of us females in the 20 – 50 age bracket anyway.  Many of us identify with Nina’s awkwardness and internal monoligue, and having a crazy yet utterly loveable family like the Proudmans. We want to hang with Billie and marry Patrick/Dr Henvel/Mick/Jimmy. Perhaps we relate to it because it is an Aussie production. In this world of globalisation, it’s truly refreshing to hear an Aussie accent on the television in a local setting.

This got me thinking of all the other great Aussie television series I have loved. Here is my top list in no particular order:

  • Offspring
  • Secret Life of Us
  • Rake
  • Sea Change
  • Kath and Kim
  • Love My Way
  • Summer Heights High
Summer Heights High - comedy gold.

  1. I am a die hard Offspring fan! The show makes me laugh and the ugly cry, like, pretty much every single bloody episode! I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I so relate to the juxtaposition of vulnerability and strength displayed by all the characters. I also love how at it’s core, it’s a show about women, especially the bond between two incredibly complex and amazing sisters. So are ya gettin the feeling I might be a teeny bit obsessed with Offspring!

My other nom for Aussie TV show would have to be Heartbreak High. It pretty much guided my initiation to adolescense!

    PS: great post Em. Xx

    • Thanks Sabs!

You are totally right about the ugly cry that comes with every episode! It is true that the sisterhood that has been developed over the seasons is the soul of the show.

As for Heartbreak High, I think our whole generation can relate! I remember having to watch it in secret as my little sister wasn’t allowed to watch it yet! 🙂

  2. I’ve been living in Melbourne for almost three years and I still can’t help but feel like a character out of The Secret Life of Us. Especially when I’m sipping wine at a rooftop bar or walking along St Kilda esplanade with the beach and palm trees, all so close to the city. I can almost hear the show’s theme song by MotorAce playing in the background. Such a great show!

    • You are totally right Shannon! That show was a big part of my desire to move to Melbourne one day. Guess I’m going to have to live through you instead! 😉
