Every year a bunch of my soul sisters and I get together for a girls trip. We have been friends/family for a very loong time, with some of us knowing each other for over 25 years. As we are now all based either in Canberra and Melbourne, we try and find a location that is halfway and an easy drive for each tribe. This means we end up somewhere in country Victoria.Last year it was the stunning Bright, this year we went to Beechworth.
Beechworth is full of history being an original gold rush town, full of old buildings and history including being a hotspot for the Kelly Gang. There are museums to visit and the old asylum is meant to have fantastic ghost tours. Wineries are also close by. We ended up skipping all of these fab things because one of us is knocked up, Rosalina my eight month old Bubba joined in, and all we wanted to do was eat, chat, go on walks and be lazy. With this in mind, here are five fab things to check out in Beechworth …
1. Beechworth Bakery
Everyone raves about this baked goods Mecca and we now know why. Multiple stops were daily made to pick up beestings that are a custard lover’s heaven, lemon slices, raspberry lamingtons and lots more. My Work Wifey even detours road trips just to stop by the Beechworth Bakery.
2. Bridge Road Brewers
Off the main road next to the cafe Peddlers (which is another great spot) is a laneway. Follow it down and be rewarded with a food, beer and playground wonderland. The laneway opens up into a great beer garden that is surrounded by the gorgeous old brick buildings. A cute cubbyhouse with a slide and swings keeps the kids happy when waiting for delicious pizzas and main meals are being cooked. Try the duck and orange pizza or the ribs! I had a yummy local cider and a girlfriend tried out the beer tasting paddle with 10 beers to try out. The service is fantastic and very accomodating. It is pretty cool to eat and drink inside a working brewery as well.
3. Beechworth Books
If you know me you know I love a good bookstore and Beechworth Books is up there! Located on the Main Street I was immediately drawn to it. Plus I had TIME to browse which is the greatest thing ever. Beechworth Books has a fabulous selection including the best children’s book section I think I have ever seen. It caters for all children’s ages, includes classics and newcomers plus many titles I haven’t heard of but now want! I ended up dropping quite a bit of coin, but it is an investment in my kiddies’ imaginations so totally worthwhile. The lady working there (sorry didn’t catch her name) was super lovely and helpful. Highly recommend you check it out.
4. Woolshed Falls
A short drive out of town is Woolshed Falls and it’s worth checking out. You can walk down to the rocks and observe from the top quote easily, just make sure you use a baby carrier if you have Bubba with you and sturdy shoes (I did it in thongs, what a loser). There is a self guided walk you can do around the Falls and its historic gold rush sites. The Falls were quite impressive as they plummeted over a cliff, I can only imagine how forceful it would be after heavy rain.
5. Beechworth Cottages
We stayed at the McNamara Cottage at Beechworth Cottages. It was the perfect choice with lots of room to spread out, comfy beds, great kitchen and a nice walk into town and back again to work off the Bakery damage. Give it a go when you have your own Girls Trip in Beechworth.
Have you ever been to Beechworth? What are your highlights? Where else do you recommend for a Girls Trip?
Lots of love,
